2015: The Ellysage Family

December 31, 2015

(This post is written by Samantha, the co-founder and CEO of Ellysage.)

What a year 2015 has been! With all that’s going on, it’s actually pretty nice to take a step back to look at everything that Ellysage has accomplished this year. And like a proud parent, I must say it’s pretty amazing what we’ve achieved thus far.

Ellysage has grown tremendously in 2 years, however, the credit is neither mine nor Fiona’s alone. Our achievements are the result of the blood, sweat, and tears of the team that I have with me. Initially, this blog post was meant to be a recap of 2015, sort of a “walk down memory lane” kind of post. But after writing draft after draft, I realized that there is nothing I would rather write about, than a tribute post to the team working behind the scenes. So to my dear girls (and boy), here’s a toast to you!

Fiona and I started Ellysage with a vision – to achieve what the bigger brands (both local and international) have achieved, but in a shorter time span. And this was an insanely huge undertaking. Such a vision tests your discipline, your dedication, and most importantly it makes you question how deep a passion you have for what you do. Suffice to say, I am immensely proud of everyone who has been a part of Team Ellysage.

The funny thing is, with each passing month, and with each new batch of hires, I constantly find myself thinking “I’ve never built a team so strong before”. The best part is that the team is strong not only because of the skills that every individual possesses, but the fact that we’ve got a strong culture that encourages, tests, and pushes every individual to stretch themselves further – and that’s what makes us, as a team, strong.

So here I am, on 31 December, looking at what is now, and the people who form Team Ellysage today. Compared to where we first started out, we’re almost unrecognizable. From being just Fiona and myself in our tiny room, we now have a strong team of 8 with a couple of young and adorable part timers helping us out when things get crazy busy. And I think the best thing that distinguishes us from the rest is that, at Ellysage, we’re not just co-workers, we’re family.

As a leader, I have to determine the direction of our brand, and what our next step is. Knowing that the careers of so many promising young individuals rest in my hands, I do feel the pressure to make sure we come out of this with something worth talking about. I do have my moments of self-doubt, dark times when I start questioning myself if I’m even making the right move. When people ask me what keeps me going, what drives me to work through these moments of doubt, without hesitation, I always answer: my team.

I kid you not when I say that Team Ellysage feels like family. So much so that when I decided to wrap up this year with a team video, my past employees were willing to take time out and come back to make this video a reality. I truly hope that this blog post, and the video below, gives you a glimpse into the passion that drives this brand. If you are one of the customers who’ve received my personal emails or text messages, you’ve probably heard me say time and again that my team takes a lot of pride in what we do. What can I say, we really really do (I almost sound like a broken record by now, haha).

For every strong brand out there, there is an even stronger team supporting it. I am forever thankful for every single member of my team, not just for the work that they do, but for believing in my dream and making it ours. I hope that you, my dear reader, enjoyed this rather unusual post that's not characteristic of what usually goes up on our blog. I also hope that you've enjoyed the short little video that we've prepared. As 2015 comes to a close, Team Ellysage wishes you a Happy New Year, and may 2016 be bigger and better for you! Cheers!
